Re: Fulton County Hospital in Salem Arkansas
Hi Forum,
It seems to me that Fulton has undergone considerable internal restructuring by an outside hospital. My question is whether or not this undertaking to make Fulton viable has anything to do with the larger Hospital plan local prominent citizens have been studying. I'm all for improving Fulton but it is critical that the new regional hospital plan not be connected to what does or does not happen at Fulton.

Hi Forum,
Just a question... If we didn't have Fulton, the nearest hospital would be how far away?
Something to think about....

Hi Mike,
The "money quote in the article you cite is the following:
"In making Baxter Regional's proposal, CEO Ron Peterson told the board,
"Health care is a hard, tough industry to be in and the only way, I
believe, to make it is to work together...so that we can all succeed."
In voting against a partnership with Baxter Regional, the hospital
board rejected the advice of companies it consulted about its financial
and operational problems. Dixon Hughes, the hospital's accounting firm,
the QHR hospital management firm and Baxter Regional all stated, in
appearances before the board, that very few small, rural hospitals can
continue to survive independently in a tough economic environment, with
more Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement cuts on the way. "

"We can't operate this facility, with as many services as we have,
without showing a loss. We need more physicians in this area utilizing
our hospital and our services. We tried our best by hiring two, but
that didn't pan out. Otherwise, things are not going to get better. We
also need additional revenue streams, such as home health, hospice, and
durable medical equipment. We've developed a niche market for our swing
bed unit, but what about surgery? Do we want to open up a surgical
unit? Do we have the volumes to do that? I'm real iffy there. I don't
want to offer a service if we aren't going to be top-notch at it. We
have some serious things to look at as an organization going forward."
