Re: Homesteading
Hi Mike,
Great reply. 60 x120 lots are not made for farming. I'm all for the"back to the earth" movement, but it's not what CV was designed for. I'll never forget this neighbor I had once that got a chicken who would chase you if you didn't feed it. Eventually it went totally wild --I think they call that "free ranging" -- and the poor vicious thing got hit by a car. Of course, the chicken was just the tip of the iceberg. Then there was the "natural fertilizer." Enough said.

Re: Homesteading
I am not in favor of it at all inside the village. These people wanting to "urban farm" their little CV lots is a ridiculous concept. Nothing wrong with people's small gardens, but this concept of homesteading and urban farming and harvesting is about much more than a simple garden in the backyard that your grandmother used to have. CE is trying hard to clean up some of the 'less desirable'' areas and this would make the job even harder. I do not want people with even a small amount of chickens around the lakefront. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but if someone wants to house chickens, the village is not the place and they would be better suited to be out in the country. Sharp County has ample land for sale suited for that, but CV is not the place. If it came to that, I would be a very loud vocal opponent of getting the chickens out. I would become a bull in the china shop on that one. Just my opinion.

Re: Homesteading
Homesteading is much more than a well earned tax credit for some folks. I admire the American spirit in the movement. But like I said, it isn't without controversy in many areas including our own. Not everyone around here wants chickens wandering over from their neighbor's yard.

Re: Homesteading
To me it meant a $350 reduction on my property taxes.
Modern times have changed how we look at things sometimes huh?

Homesteading
Hi Forum,
Recently there was a homesteading fair in Hardy. There are some great pictures that can be found at the following site:
http://www.areawidenews.com/gallery/homesteaders-day-2011
This is also a worthwhile discussion in general. What is homesteading? What does it mean today? How might is be appropriate or inappropriate in a given area or community? Here is a good article on the subject of what Homesteading means today:
