Thanks for the link. $55 isn't bad--could buy a tank of gas. Are you ready to take on the little devils?

Google Arkansas Department of Education.  On their website search for School District Websites and you should get a list of all schools in the State.  Click on the school you are interested in.

Substitute pay is set by individual district board policies and is usually included in their policies and/or salary schedules posted on their websites.  This information is sometimes found under "Act 989" on the site or under District Information.  The pay is also based on who you are subbing for; i.e., certified, classified, extended sub, etc.  The posted policies can be lengthy, so you might search for "substitute" to see if the salary is included.  Other school districts in the area may have a different pay schedule.

The personnel policies for Highland indicate sub pay as $55 per day for teachers, $38 for bus drivers, and $47 for cooks.  You should check this to be sure as it could change.

There are certain times during the school year when subs are needed more often and a dependable sub will be used frequently.

Thank you for your reply. You seem to have a solid grasp on the details. 35 dollars a day is interesting when one considers it wouldn't give a sub even minimum wage for a true days work-- especially if they did any honest preparation for the lessons. Nonetheless, I plan to look into it. Thanks again.

It used to be as of a few years ago just a Bachelor Degree and pass a criminal background check, but don't quote me--those requirements keep changing. I know it didn't pay very well--about $35/day.  I know if you a Bachelor's degree you can join the Teach Arkansas Alternate Teaching Program which requires 3 weeks of courses 2 years in a row and costs $1200 per summer for the applicant.  You have to take some teacher's exams through Praxis as well.  There's not a lot a of teaching jobs to go around for sure, but i supposed Math and Science teachers are still in need.

Hi Forum,

I really would like to hear from anyone who has served as a substitute teacher in the area. What is the process for getting approved and how often were you called? Thanks.
