From May 19, 2011 Minutes:

1. Rita Kenney addressed the City Council on the controlled archery deer hunts. Kenney said that she had lived in Cherokee Village for seven years and moved here for the birds, wildlife and natural surroundings. She expressed that she had contacted Arkansas Game and Fish, and they explained to her, that the deer hunts are up to the City. She does not think this is the right way to destroy the deer and asked the City Council not to plan on the deer hunt this fall. Mayor Hefley explained that the hunt was voted on last year, for this year. Stokes said that at this time of year the Does are in the woods with their fawns, and that explains why she has not seen as many.

Is it true that the oddly bud shaped ears on many of the local deer is a sign of inbreeding?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I believe most of the hunting is in the western unpopulated areas of the village. There is no way some deer hunter is going to be walking through the woods anywhere on the east side with all the houses and population. It would be a waste of time. But I do agree, I would not authorize anyone on my property like that although I think the chance of anyone wanting to would be slim to none. Not going to happen.

2011-12 Cherokee Village Arkansas Urban Archery Deer Season and Reservation Form

Season is open Sept. 5-Nov. 11, 2011 and Jan. 1-31, 2012.

No bag limit. Archery hunting only. The first deer taken must be a doe.

After that, deer of either sex may be taken. Deer taken within the Cherokee Village Urban Deer Zone do not count in the hunter’s seasonal bag limit.

The three-point rule does not apply to this hunt.
